  • Requirements for an undergraduate degree are a High School / 12th standard passing certificate, TOEFL examination and SAT – 1 entrance examination. Ivy League/top schools require an additional entrance examination called the SAT – 2.
  • An undergraduate / Bachelors degree in the United States is for a 4 year duration (unlike 3 years in India and the UK).

The requirements for a graduate / Masters Degree are 4 years of undergraduate study. However, few selected colleges do admit Indian students with a 12 + 3 years of study (mostly for MBA programs and very few MS programs). Therefore, in general a master’s course in the U.S. would require a BCOM (or related Bachelors degree) plus at least 1 year of the MCOM/equivalent. A science student would require at least the first year of the MSc., while an Arts student will require at least the first year of the M.A. degree. GMAT is required for business studies whereas GRE is required for sciences, engineering and top arts programs. TOEFL is again a must for all students.

There are three main semester intakes per year in the United States. These vary from university to university. Fall (September) is the most popular with 70% of the student traffic opting for this semester. Then comes spring (January) and the last is summer (May – June). Summer is rarely chosen by Indian students.

There are two broad categories of colleges/universities in the United States. The first is state-managed or public/national universities. The fees here are lower and the admissions more competitive. Private run universities are equally well – reputed with the fees being relatively higher and admissions criteria varying as per the major and location.

Application deadline for September intake is Jan- March earlier for more competitive courses.Minimum visa requirements – Acceptance form from your chosen university, application fee and evidence of financial ability to cover costs (tuition and living expenses).
